
Monroy-Bracamonte was first deported in 1997 after a drug possession conviction.
According to a report from The Associated Press, 34-year-old Luis Enrique Monroy-Bracamonte (who calls himself Marcelo Marquez), the suspect in the shooting death of two California police officers on Friday, was twice deported to Mexico.
Citing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson Virginia Kice, The AP notes that Monroy-Bracamonte was first deported in 1997 after a drug possession conviction. He was deported again in 2001.
According to an account of Monroy-Bracamonte’s six-hour shooting spree provided by CNN, the suspect and his wife, who is also in jail on suspicion of attempted murder and carjacking, killed two police officers in two counties, injured a third police officer, attempted to steal several cars and shot one of those drivers.
Sacramento County Deputy Danny Oliver, 47, and Placer County Deputy Michael David Davis Jr., 42, were fatally shot by Monroy-Bracamonte. Placer County Deputy Jeff Davis was injured after being shot in the arm. Anthony Holmes, 38, is the driver who was shot during a carjacking attempt. CNN reports that he’s currently hospitalized in serious condition.
According to FoxNews.com, Davis Jr. was killed 26 years to the day his deputy sheriff father died in the line of duty. Davis Sr. was killed when his helicopter crashed while chasing drug smugglers.
