Report: Regretful armed robber returns cash, waits for police

The man reportedly told police that he had planned to use the money to leave town and start anew.

According to a report from The Associated Press, 23-year-old Cyle Warren Abbott Jr. robbed a gas station clerk of money and beer on Sunday, but returned several hours later to give the stolen money back.

Abbot Jr., who robbed a gas station in Eureka, California, reportedly told police that he had planned to use the money to leave town and start anew, but quickly realized the error of his ways after leaving the gas station.

The Times-Standard reports that the gas station’s assistant manager phoned authorities several hours after he first reported the robbery and told them that the suspect had returned with the money he had taken. Abbott Jr. reportedly waited at the gas station for police to arrive so he could be taken into custody. Before leaving, he told the station’s employees that he was sorry for what he did.

The Times-Standard notes that the assistant manager had originally reported that the station was robbed by a man with a handgun, but Abbott Jr. said he had used a BB pistol. He also said that he had tossed it onto the ground after committing the robbery, but officers who searched the area weren’t able to locate the weapon.

Abbott Jr. was arrested on robbery and probation violation charges.
