‘Ouija’s’ $20 million dollar debut: #1 at the box office this weekend

The pre-Halloween scary movie Ouija shot to the top of the box office race this weekend, raking in $20 million.

Ouija is based on the classic Hasbro board game of the same name, the one where players attempt to speak with spirits and ask them to spell out answers to questions. The film is rated PG-13 and was produced with Hasbro in mind, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The supernatural horror flick was directed by Stiles White, and co-written by him, as well, along with Juliet Snowden. The plot centers around a girl’s mysterious death, after recording herself playing with an ancient Ouija board. Her friends then decide to investigate and soon learn that the supernatural forces on the other side are not to enthused with the group’s meddling ways.

The film review website rogerebert.com gave the horror flick three out of four stars. Reviewer Odie Henderson said that the film had a good spooky narrative and was visually easy on the eyes.

“The movie has a nice visual polish and a story that covers all the narrative bases of a good spooky bedtime story, ” wrote Henderson. “Director Stiles White times its jump scares with the knowledge that jump scares are silly and predictable: a gas stove comes on with the sound of a jet engine, mirrors always have bad things reflected in them and a flashlight rolling away always stops rolling to illuminate something unfriendly.”

Newcomer Olivia Cooke plays the main character, Laine Morris. Douglas Smith (Big Love) plays the male lead. Darren Kagasoff (The Secret Life of The American Teenager) also stars in the film.
