It was a big night for Jim Carrey on Saturday Night Live this week. His third stint as host could have gone either way, and fans were waiting to see if the funny man could pull through with the laughs. He did.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the show did get off to a “mediocre start”. The opening monologue started off a bit slowly, with Carrey playing Helvis, a cross between Elvis and Satan. After the odd opener, though, Carrey’s innate ability to make audiences laugh gained traction.
His trilogy of parody commercials, all based on Matthew McConaughey’s Lincoln car ads, were a hit. In the last one, Carrey also poked a bit of fun at the Dennis Haysbert Allstate commercials, pulling together a comedic concept with lots of laughs at the end.
There was one skit that did not come across as expected. Carrey’s foray into the zombie apocalypse came across as awkward and a bit slow, like the monologue.
EW’s Jonathon Dornbrush mentioned that Carrey’s cue card reading was a bit off.
“Carrey’s cue card reading was stilted, the jokes fell flat at nearly every punchline, and the group of survivors never had a chance to do anything all that interesting.”
That being said, Rolling Stone said that Carrey “shined” for his entire performance of the Halloween-themed episode. The magazine pointed out that the Dumb and Dumber To star delved into the odd side of himself with the Helvis monologue but noted that the weirdness was planned and Carrey came across as himself … wacky, wonderful and most of all funny.
