Jim Carrey returns to his roots to host SNL

On the verge of releasing yet another Dumb and Dumber flick, Carey pulled all the stops while hosting SNL last night.

When it comes to improve there are not many like Jim Carrey. So the folks over at SNL were smart enough to let him carry on and do what he does best last night when he returned to host the late night sketch show.

Opening the show dressed as what appeared to be the love child of Elvis and the devil, Carrey told the audience, “I like to call this Helvis,’ he said, shaking his hips like The King himself.” From there it was only up as the comedian won over the crowd again and again with his different guises.

One has to wonder in the end how much was written out during the week and how much was Carrey improving. Those who wonder will never know but it does not matter because the night was flawless.

Great skits that are likely to be water cooler talk come Monday were the one where other cast members dressed as a cascade of Carrey’s roles throughout the years. He even poked fun at himself during that one saying, “I thought people didn’t like the Cable Guy?” To that Jay Pharoah, dressed as the crazed technician said, “Not at first, people thought I got paid too much but I’m a real cult classic.”

Other buzzworthy moments were when he played a Halloween store clerk who’d gotten possessed and of course the office Halloween party. In that one he wa done up like the little girl in that Sia video for “Chandelier.”

All of this was to promote Carrey’s latest film, Dumb and Dumber To, out November 14.
