Apple struggles for dominance in the tablet market

Apple sold an estimated 11.5 million iPads in the September quarter, down from the 14.1 million a year ago.

Apple debuted two new iPads this week: the flagship iPad Air 2 and an updated version of the iPad Mini. While both received positive reviews, especially the Air 2, questions remains about whether they will be enough to halt the slowing growth of iPad sales globally.

Back in July, Vox.com reported that iPad sales had dropped for the second quarter in a row — down 9.2 percent from the previous year. And earlier this month at Forbes, technology reporter, Chuck Jones, estimated that Apple sold 11.5 million iPads in the September quarter, again down from the 14.1 million the company sold a year ago.

With a 40 percent faster A8X processor and two-and-a-half times the graphics power, the new Air 2 is thinner, lighter and significantly than last year’s model, with a better camera thrown in too for good measure. But analysts agree it is not a game-changer.

“The changes in the Air 2 are evolutionary, not revolutionary,” writes Troy Wolverton in the San Jose Mercury. “If you’ve got a recent iPad, there’s nothing about the Air 2 that will make you want to ditch it for the new one. And if you haven’t yet bought an iPad, I don’t think there’s anything about the Air 2 that’s going to convince you it’s time.”

Though it certainly does not help that there are numerous cheap Android tablets that consumers can buy at a fraction of the iPad’s price, the problem for Apple is not so much competition in tablet market, as a diminishing interest in tablets overall.

“Plenty of smartphone owners feel they can get along fine without a tablet, and plenty of tablet owners feel they can get along fine without constant upgrades,” notes Vox,com’s Matthew Yglesias.

Still, Apple can take comfort in the fact that the iPhone continues to dominate the market like no other product. Sales of the iPhone were up 12.7 percent in July, before the iPhone 6 had even been released yet.
