It is not uncommon for new albums to leak before their release date. Many just expect it nowadays, so it is not surprising that Taylor Swift’s 1989 is already available before its Monday drop date. What is a little shocking though is her fans’ promises to not listen until it is out for real.

Talk about dedication. Most fans are not that patient and often search high and low to hear new music from their favorite artists – not Taylor Swift’s. One fan on Twitter who goes by @winterswifty said, “DONT LEAK ANYTHING ABOUT 1989 AGAIN SERIOUSLY YOU NEED TO STOP DOING THAT 3 MORE DAYS JUST BE PATIENT.” The use of capslock indicated how serious a matter this leak is to Swift’s fans. Another fan, @swifts1989, got a little extreme. They tweeted, “I swear to god if I see one more person threatening to leak 1989 I will hurt them.”

While records leaking is not uncommon, Vulture did do some investigating and thinks that the blame for this one in particular can be pointed at France. Lindsey Weber of Vulture said, “We’re no Sherlock, but as far as we’re concerned, the culprit is French and associated with Target.” She later added evidence.

“If you downloaded the original leak, you’ll see that song titles are missing and in their place there are a slew of numbered ‘pistes.’” A “piste” is a French term for “track.”

The French may not have won though. Swift’s last album, Red, leaked as well and it went on to sell 1.2 million copies in its first week. So it looks like 1989 will be okay. However, the music industry is not looking too hot as a whole this year. Us Weekly’s entertainment director Ian Drew told USA Today said,  “No album has gone platinum this year – even the mighty Beyonce’s – because no one is buying albums anymore. It’s all streaming.”

Those who cannot wait can find 1989 online. Those who plan on being good boys and girls can get it when it officially drops on Monday, October, 27.
