Graham's remains were found on October 18 on an abandoned property near the town of Charlottesville, Virginia.
Police confirmed their worst fears on Friday: Human remains found last weekend in Albemarle County, Virginia, belong to missing UVA student Hannah Graham, CNN reports.
Graham’s remains were found on October 18 on an abandoned property near the town of Charlottesville, Virginia, where Hannah attended college. The college sophomore was last spotted on September 13.
Hannah’s parents issued a somber statement on Friday.
“When we started this journey together we all hoped for a happier ending,” the couple said in a statement obtained by CNN. “Sadly that was not to be, but due to the tenacity and determination of Longo [thew college town’s police chief] , Hannah is coming home to us and we will be eternally grateful to him for this.”
“We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful daughter,” they added.
Now that Hannah’s remains have been positively identified, the focus of the investigation turns to the man who authorities believe abducted and killed Graham: 32-year-old Jesse Matthew Jr.
According to Reuters, Matthew is sitting in a Charlottesville jail after being charged with abduction with intent to defile. The Albermarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office is now deciding what additional charges to file against Matthew.
