The policy extends to not just guns, but to any prop, as long as the student complies with the school's dress code.
The Broken Bow School board voted unanimously Monday to allow students at Broken Bow High School to pose with guns in their senior portraits. The policy extends to not just guns, but to any prop, as long as the student complies with the school’s dress code and the photo is “tasteful and appropriate.”
A student spurred the policy announcement a year ago by asking if he could pose with his rifle in his senior portrait. While the deadline for that year had already passed, the student prompted the school board to revisit its policies on the issue. According to Broken Bow public schools Superintendent Mark Sievering, a key reason the board chose to allow firearms was the importance of hunting to the local community.
“The board, I believe, felt they wanted to give students who are involved in those kinds of things the opportunity to take a senior picture with their hobby, with their sport, just like anybody with any other hobby or sport,” Sievering told the Omaha World-Herald.
“I understand that in different cultures this would be viewed differently, but in the rural, hunting culture here, it is something that is viewed in a positive way,” he told the Huffington Post.
While guns are now okay in yearbook photos, “brandishing” them or pointing them at the camera will not be allowed, according to the policy. Neither will photographs of game shot by the student “if the animal is in obvious distress.”
The town of Broken Bow contains only 3500 people, and a mere 50-60 of those are seniors in any given year, so the total number of students affected by the policy will be minimal. It should also be noted that senior portrait photos are taken off campus, so no students will be bringing their guns to school for yearbook photos.
