The alleged monument destroyer is currently under evaluation at a mental facility.
According to a report from KOCO Oklahoma City, the Secret Service took 29-year-old Michael Tate Reed Jr. into custody Friday for allegedly driving his car into and destroying a Ten Commandments monument on Thursday. The monument is located outside the Oklahoma Capitol building in Oklahoma City.
“It is appalling that this monument was attacked,” Governor Marry Fallin tweeted before Reed was arrested. “Those who committed this crime will be caught & held responsible.”
U.S. Secret Service agent David Allison told The Associated Press that Reed admitted to smashing the monument and told authorities that Satan made him to do it.
He reportedly made the confession after showing up at a federal building. He also threatened to kill the president and admitted to peeing on the monument before smashing it to pieces.
The monument has been the subject of controversy since it was first erected. In 2013, the ACLU filed a lawsuit in Oklahoma County District Court to have it removed.
“The ACLU of Oklahoma and our clients are outraged at this apparent act of vandalism,” the ACLU said in a statement obtained by KOCO. “While we have and continue to seek the removal of the Ten Commandments monument from the Capitol grounds through the judicial process, the Ten Commandments constitute a strong foundation in our clients’ deeply held religious beliefs.”
The AP adds that Reed is currently under evaluation at a mental facility.
