Google CEO Larry Page recently sent a memo to employees passing huge new responsibilities to Android director Sundar Pichai.
Things are changing around quite a bit at Google. According to a report published by The Verge on Friday, Google CEO Larry Page recently sent a memo to employees passing huge new responsibilities to Sundar Pichai. Pichai is quite respected at Google, and is currently the head of the company’s Android division. The new reorganization of the business, however, will put him in charge of most of Google’s major product divisions, including Google +, research, Maps, and more.
Those responsibilities have, until now, been a part of Page’s day-to-day work. While different executives lead each branch, they have reported to Page in the past. Those executives will now report to Pichai, meaning that the Android leader is now the person overseeing most of Google’s major operations.
In other words, by giving a fair chunk of his work to Pichai, Page is taking a big step back from the company he helped build. He is not leaving the company, or stepping down from his CEO position. On the contrary, the memo said that Page would still be overseeing Google’s business and operations, and that the reorganization would give him the chance to focus more on “the bigger picture.”
Some will probably speculate that the reorganization has something to do with Page’s health, which has been a topic of discussion before. However, as Page revealed in 2013, his health issue is merely a voice problem. It is probably not anything life threatening, or anything that might lead him to slowly phase himself out of the company.
So what is the motivation for the reorganization? Perhaps Page is cooking up a new venture for Google, and needs to free up his time a bit. Or maybe Pichai’s leadership in the Android division has been so impressive that Page wanted to give him a significant promotion. Either way, things are changing at Google, and we probably will not know the full impact of those changes until a few weeks or months down the road.
