While nothing to scoff at by any means, the show's soft start was left behind by ABC's 20/20, as well as the World Series on Fox.
Game Three of the World Series did not help NBC’s Constantine get off to a strong start Friday night.
Entertainment Weekly reports that NBC’s supernatural drama series opened to 4.3 million viewers and a 1.4 rating among adults 18-49. While nothing to scoff at by any means, the show’s soft start was left behind by ABC’s 20/20, as well as the World Series on Fox.
Constantine is based on the comic series Hellblazer, by DC Comics. Hellblazer features a street-smart magician named John Constantine. He is an occult detective, and is haunted by the spirits of deceased friends. In the television series, the premise is similar. Constantine is an occult detective and con man, trying to save humanity from the supernatural, while struggling with his own demons and past mistakes.
The show was one of the last ones to debut this fall, and served as the lead in to the fourth season premiere of Grimm, which had 5.3 million viewers and a 1.5 rating, down 17 percent from last year.
Hollywood newcomer Matt Ryan plays Constantine. He is a Welsh actor who has appeared on the CBS crime drama Criminal Minds and performed voice and motion capture for the video game Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
The Constantine television series was developed by Daniel Cerone, who created the Canadian police series Motive, along with The Dark Knight Trilogy alum David S. Goyer.
Reviews of the Constantine opener have been mixed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pilot, although tepid, is said to have promise if it can gain traction via the show’s star, Ryan, “who manages to ground what otherwise seems like an insane amount of explosions, action without reason and utter jibberish.”
