ABC cancels ‘Manhattan Love Story’ after just four episodes

The show will be replaced by a Halloween special next week, and an additional episode of 'Selfie' the next.

ABC’s new relationship comedy Manhattan Love Story has been canceled, making it the first series of the new season to get the axe, confirms Entertainment Weekly.

The Tuesday night show was canceled after four episodes. Just 2.6 million viewers tuned in Tuesday, earning a 0.7 rating among adults aged 18-49 — the coveted demographic.

Manhattan Love Story followed the new relationship of a young couple played by Analeigh Tipton and Jake McDorman.

Next Tuesday the show will be replaced by a Halloween special. The following week, viewers who tune in to the Tuesday 8 p.m. slot will see an additional episode of SelfieManhattan Love Story‘s lead-in.

Selfie earned a 1.1 rating from the coveted demographic and 3.8 million viewers watched its most recent episode.

In giving Manhattan Love Story a four-episode run — rather than canceling it after just one episode — ABC demonstrated a new trend among television executives. The delay, according to Entertainment Weekly, is the result of executives waiting to gather more information on DVR viewing as well as being less optimistic about midseason replacement show options.

While ABC canceled Manhattan Love Story after just four episodes, the show’s stars still have projects in the pipeline. Tipton, who played Dana on the series, has two movies coming out next year: Mississippi Grind and Viral. Both movies are currently in post-production. McDorman, who played Peter, has three movies in post-production, with two, American Sniper and See You in Valhalla, expected out this year.
