Trailer for upcoming 'Avengers' films beats Marvel's previous record with 34 million views in its first 24 hours online.
Marvel planned on unveiling the first teaser for Avengers: Age of Ultron during next Tuesday’s broadcast of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but the studio was forced to officially release the trailer early after the footage leaked onto the internet Wednesday afternoon. Despite the leak, Marvel’s parent company Disney reports the trailer still earned 34.3 million global views within 24 hours, shattering previous records.
Many viewers got their first glimpse of the first trailer for the highly-anticipated upcoming superhero film when a bootlegged version was prematurely released on Wednesday afternoon. The trailer was sent for translation to prepare for its scheduled debut, so sources at the studio believe the footage was leaked by someone from one of the international markets. As the bootlegged trailer was extremely raw, Marvel decided to put out the official and polished version online so fans could see it the way it was meant to be viewed.
“Damnit, Hydra,” Marvel Entertainment jokingly posted from their official Twitter account, blaming the leak on the sinister organization which is currently taking over their cinematic universe before posting the trailer themselves.. “Here it is! Watch the @Avengers: #AgeofUltron Teaser Trailer right NOW #Avengers.”
Of the 34.3 million global views, around 26.2 million came from clicks on Marvel’s YouTube account. That number alone was enough to beat the records of the studio’s past superhero trailers by a significant margin – the previous record-holder was the teaser for Iron Man 3, which earned 23.14 million views within the first 24 hours of its release. According to sources at Disney, the original Avengers teaser came next with 20.4 million views.
As Marvel was hoping the release of the Avengers trailer would give the October 28 episode of Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. a ratings boost, the studio will instead unveil new footage from the film in its place. Viewers will reportedly get an additional sneak peek at the film on ABC on Nov. 9 during Marvel 75 Years: From Pulp to Pop!. Avengers: Age of Ultron premieres the May 1, 2015.
