Actress Daniele Watts and boyfriend charged with lewd conduct after September incident

The couple claimed their civil rights had been violated.

Daniele Watts, 28, is probably better known for her real life drama instead of the movies she’s appeared in over her career.

The Django Unchained bit player and her boyfriend, Brian James Lucas, 43, were each charged with one misdemeanor count of lewd conduct in a criminal complaint filed on Monday morning in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The charges stem from an incident in September when Watts was handcuffed by police after receiving multiple reports of a man and a woman having sex in a Mercedes. Afterward, Watts and Lucas took to social media, complaining that their civil rights had been violated for nothing more than a public display of affection. The couple went to say that the only reason this happened in the first place was because she was black and he was white.

“I was handcuffed and detained by 2 police officers from the Studio City Police Department after refusing to agree that I had done something wrong by showing affection, fully clothed, in a public place,” wrote Watts on Facebook.

Lucas went as far as to accuse the police of discrimination, claiming that they thought she was a prostitute based upon her skin color and the way she was dressed.

But prosecutors decided to pursue charges after they listened to LAPD audio of the day in question. They also received eyewitness reports and photographs of Watts straddling Lucas in the passenger seat of the car, in which her breasts are clearly exposed.

That was enough for the city to file a complaint on Monday against the couple, who now face a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Watts’ spokeswoman has declined requests for comment.
