Report: Elizabeth Pena died of complications from alcohol abuse

TMZ released a copy of the actress's death certificate from her October 14th passing.

Elizabeth Pena’s cause of death has been revealed. TMZ has uncovered the Cuban-American actress’s death certificate, which reveals she died from complications of alcohol abuse.

TMZ reports that Pena, 55, had cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol abuse. She had apparently had the disease for months but it had recently turned acute. Immediately before her death, she suffered from acute gastrointestinal bleeding that caused her heart to stop. She passed away on October 14 in Los Angeles.

According to NY Daily News’ retrospective of her career, Pena appeared in over 100 productions, including voice work, over a 35-year career. A native of New Jersey born to Cuban immigrant parents, she appeared on film for the first time in 1979 but her “breakout” role came in 1987 with the Richie Valens biopic La Bamba. Last year she appeared on ABC’s Modern Family playing Sofia Vergara’s character Gloria’s force of nature mother from Colombia.

Pena is survived by her husband and two children.
