Boy killed by ice cream truck, driver attacked

The driver was not arrested.

Running after the ice cream truck is a fond childhood memory for many, but for a 7-year-old boy who wanted some ice cream, the experience turned into a nightmare for his parents.

According to a report from The Associated Press, a child was killed by an ice cream truck in South Los Angeles on Wednesday.

The boy, who later died at a hospital, was riding a motorized bike alongside the truck when the collision took place.  Police believe the collision was a tragic accident, The AP notes.

“I walked outside. He was lying on the ground bleeding, so I just tried to comfort the family ’cause they was screaming,” Linda Black, a witness, told CBSLA.com. “It’s really sad because I have a kid that is younger than he is.”

According to KRMG, the driver of the ice cream truck was assaulted after the 7 year old was hit. Although he received only bruises during the attack, he reportedly told police that bricks were thrown at his truck and that someone pulled a knife on him.

“Right now, it appears it was bricks and sticks, and somebody may have pulled a knife on him,” said LAPD Sgt. Timothy Colson, according to KABC.

The driver was not arrested, KABC adds, but the truck may be unlicensed.
