Quicker than an iOS update: Christian Bale is cast as Steve Jobs in new biopic

'Social Network' screenplay writer casts former Batman as Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

After Ashton Kutcher’s 2013 biographical film based on the early years of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs’ career opened to a great deal of fanfare, The Social Network screenplay writer Aaron Sorkin decided to make his own Jobs film based on Walter Isaacson’s biography of the cultural icon. However, Sorkin turned some heads while talking with Bloomberg on Thursday by announcing that the muscled former star of The Dark Knight trilogy, Christian Bale, will portray the skinny Steve Jobs in his upcoming film.

During the interview with Bloomberg, Sorkin revealed that he decided to cast Bale before the actor even came in for an audition.

“What we needed was the best actor. He really is a phenomenal actor,” said Sorkin of Bale, who won an Oscar for his The Fighter supporting role in 2010 and earned an Oscar nomination in 2013 for American Hustle. “He didn’t have to audition.”

Unlike the biographical film which came out in August 2013 under the same name and centered on Jobs’ career from college in the 1970s through the revolutionary introduction of the iPod in 2001, Sorkin’s film will reportedly focus mostly on three major speeches the Apple co-founder gave during his prestigious career. In the film, Bale will be featured in every single scene.

“He’s going to crush it,” said Sorkin, certain that the former Batman will be able to handle the “extremely difficult part.”

The film is based on Walter Isaacson’s “Steve Jobs” biography, which the late Jobs himself sanctioned before dying in 2011 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
