Taylor Swift slams criticism of her song lyrics as ‘sexist’

The singer argues no one complains when male songwriters write about their relationships.

Taylor Swift is fighting back. In an interview with Australian radio show Jules, Merrick, & Sophie</a> on Monday morning, Swift made it clear what she thought of critics who complain she only writes about her failed romantic relationships.

“Frankly, I think that’s a very sexist angle to take,” the singer, 24, argued. “No one says that about Ed Sheeran. No one says that about Bruno Mars. They’re all writing songs about their exes, their current girlfriends, their love life, and no one raises a red flag there.”

Swift is well known for writing songs that double as “blind items” about her celebrity dates. Her most recent single, Out of the Woods, off her soon to be released album 1989, is rumored to be about British singer Harry Styles. As ET Online points out, her past singles We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and I Knew You Were Trouble spurred numerous speculations that they referenced Jake Gyllenhaal and John Mayer, respectively. In the interview, however, Swift revealed that she has a “very strict personal policy” that she never names specific names about the subjects of her songs.

The singer also acknowledged that the motivations behind her songwriting were unlikely to change. “The most important thing to me is maintaining artistic integrity,” she said. “Which means me as a songwriter I still continue to write about my life.”

1989 comes out next week.
