‘Godfather’ actor files $250 million lawsuit over a ‘Simpsons’ character

Sivero believes 'Simpsons' character Louie shares his appearance and mannerisms without his consent.

Despite having major roles in The Godfather Part 2, Goodfellas and The Wedding Singer, character actor Frank Sivero may get his biggest paycheck from a television show in which he never even appeared. The 62-year-old is suing Fox Television Studios and parent company 21st Century Fox for $250 million, claiming his likeness was used for the character of Louie on The Simpsons without his consent.

In the lawsuit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Sivero states his belief that he is “the originator of the idea and character of Louie” In the complaint, Sivero reveals that, while he was in the process of developing his Franie Carbone character for Goodfellas, he lived in the same apartment complex as a number of Simpsons writers. A year after the Martin Scorsese classic premiered in 1990, the character of Louie debuted in the Simpsons episode “Bart the Murderer.”Louie has appeared in a total of 16 episodes, with the most recent episode premiering on Apr. 27, 2014. Like Sivero, the character has sideburns, coarse and curly hair, and a wise guy attitude.

“Louie’s appearance and mannerisms are strongly evocative of character actor Frank Sivero,” states the lawsuit, which notes The Simpsons has earned over $12 billion over the years via the TV show, films, video games and merchandise. Sivero believes that these massive earnings justify him demanding at least $250 million in damages for common law infringement of right of publicity, misappropriation of name and/or likeness, misappropriation of ideas, interference with prospective economic advantage and unjust enrichment.

Fox has not yet issued a public response to the suit.
