Comedian Hannibal Buress openly calls Bill Cosby a ‘rapist’

Buress adds bit about Cosby's thirteen rape accusations to his stand-up comedy routine.

Bill Cosby has been accused of drugging and sexually assaulting multiple women throughout his long and otherwise prestigious career, but as the legendary comic has never been convicted of those crimes, those accusations are very rarely discussed. However, during his comedy show in Philadelphia last Thursday, comedian Hannibal Buress outright called the former Cosby Show star a “rapist” and criticized his persona as a “clean” stand-up comic.

Thirteen women have come forward with rape allegations against Cosby over the years, and while rape is typically considered an off-limits topic in comedy shows, Buress brought Cosby’s accused crimes up several times during his stand-up routine at the Trocadero last Thursday.

“Thirteen? And it’s even worse because Bill Cosby has the f—-ing smuggest old black man public persona that I hate. ‘Pull your pants up, black people. I was on TV in the ‘80s. I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom.’ Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby, so turn the crazy down a couple notches,” said Buress. “I guess I want to just at least make it weird for you to watch Cosby Show reruns. I’ve done this bit on stage and people think I’m making it up…. when you leave here, google ‘Bill Cosby rape.’ That s–t has more results than ‘Hannibal Buress.'”

Buress, who is a regular on Comedy Central’s Broad City, once praised Bill Cosby: Himself in an interview with GQ and noted how hard it is not to curse on stage. However, in his routine last week, Buress criticized the 1983 stand-up comedy film.

“I’ll take you sayin’ lots of “mother—ers” on Bill Cosby: Himself if you weren’t a rapist.”

The comic appeared on Howard Stern’s Sirius XM radio program this Tuesday, and did not seem remotely remorseful for making a joke out of such a serious topic. Instead, he noted that he did plenty of research before coming up with the routine, and got Stern to acknowledge that Cosby “is so condescending to younger comics.”
