Yahoo has finally released a Flickr app to the app store, called Flickr 3.2, which supports the Retina display and allows users to take photos using live filters.
Late on Friday night, Yahoo released an official Flickr app for the iPad. Previously Yahoo did have an iOS app for Flickr, however the app was only for the iPhone. The iPad app, dubbed Flickr 3.2, is also optimized for the “Retina” display, which is found on the iPad Mini 2 and 3, as well as the iPad Air and the new iPad Air 2.
The Retina display has been around for a while, however it is likely the the release of iOS 8 finally prompted Yahoo to release a new app. Flickr 3.2 only works on iOS 8 and above. Provided users have the new mobile operating system, they can download the app for themselves.
According to the company, the app can display images that are extremely high resolution, with up to “3,000,000 pixels per photo.” That’s is equal to around 2,048 x 1,056 pixels.
Flickr 3.2 supports both landscape and portrait mode and also has plenty of room on the screen for descriptions of the photo and photo metadata. It also supports other Flickr features such as search and commenting. Finally, using Flickr 3.2, users are able to take pictures using their iPad and can use live filters and a live histogram so that users can see what their photo will look like before they even take the photo.
The majority of people probably will not take photos with their iPad, however for those that will, Flickr is taking advantage of the new iPads’ high resolution displays and their great camera’s. These should help lead to much better photos from the iPad.
Users who have iOS 8 or above installed on their iPad’s can go to the App Store and download the app for themselves.
