The Pumpkin Festival is a peaceful event that's been held annually in the small community since 1991.
Fall is meant to be about the changing colors, raking leaves and, of course, carving pumpkins. This weekend, however, a celebration centered around pumpkins turned ugly after parties at Keene State College, held along with the annual Keene Pumpkin Festival, turned ugly, according to a report from The Associated Press.
The Keene Pumpkin Festival is meant to be a peaceful community event. Participants in the festival, which took place at from 12-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, in downtown Keene, New Hampshire, attempt to set a world record of the greatest number of carved and lit jack-o-lanterns in one location.
This year, however, some students at Keene State College had a different outcome in mind when they began drinking on Saturday. According to The Boston Globe, riots started on Saturday and continued on Sunday morning after parties at the college turned to mayhem because some students were too drunk. Police in riot gear were reportedly asked to subdue the crowd, many of whom were throwing bottles at the officers, The Globe reports.
“State and local public safety officials are on the scene and have been working closely together to defuse the situation,” New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan said in a statement obtained by CNN. “We will continue to monitor the situation and provide any assistance necessary to Keene.”
The AP notes that video footage of the riots obtained by WMUR-TV showed people turning over a car, running from tear gas and ripping down street signs. Citing the Keene Fire Department, The Globe adds that several people were injured in the fray. Several CNN affiliates also reported that dozens of arrests have been made.
“I am saddened and disheartened at the events surrounding this year’s Keene Pumpkin Festival,” said Keene State College President Anne Huot in a statement obtained by NECN. Despite the concerted efforts of organizers, city officials, police, and Keene State College, there continued to be disruptive behavior at parties in multiple locations around the city, injuries, and property damage.”
According to FoxNews.com, the Pumpkin Festival is normally a peaceful event that’s been held annually in the small community since 1991. Unfortunately, the event also brings in students from around the region for a weekend of wild partying.
