A three-year-old girl has been beaten to death in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, The Associated Press reports.

Jeida Torres, who was rushed to the hospital on Saturday and later pronounced dead, was assaulted along with five-year-old brother. The AP says that her brother is currently in stable condition.

Twenty-year-old Kelsey Smith has been arrested and charges are pending.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the beating took place inside a room at a homeless shelter. Smith, who had been watching the kids for their mother, reportedly began beating Jeida when he discovered that she had had an accident in her pants.

“The death of a child is a tragic incident which we are taking extremely seriously. We are working with the NYPD to determine how this occurred,” said Camille Rivera, deputy commissioner for the Department of Homeless Services, in a statement.
