Searchers discovered the remains on an abandoned property in southern Albermarle County.
According to a report from The Associated Press, authorities may have discovered the human remains of missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham.
At a news conference on Saturday, Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo told reporters that searchers discovered the remains on an abandoned property in southern Albermarle County.
“Right now we have the discovery of human remains and a great deal of work ahead of us,” said Col. Steve Sellers, Albemarle County Police chief, according to NBC News. “We cannot and will not jump to any conclusions regarding today’s discovery. I ask for the public’s patience as we move forward and pursue what is now a new, ongoing death investigation.”
According to USA Today, 32-year-old Jesse Matthew is currently being held in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, charged with abduction with intent to defile. He’s the last person seen with Graham on the night she disappeared. Matthew is also linked to the 2009 death of a Virginia Tech student.
Forensic tests will be conducted to determine whether the remains are Graham’s.
