Star Wars creator George Lucas is opening up about what fans can expect from movie’s memorabilia museum and why he chose Chicago of all places to house it.
All of these details came about Friday with the director sat down with Chicago Ideas Week forum on Friday. The biggest revelation came in terms of what it will look like as a whole. Lucas said, “It’s going to be organic architecture, connected to the ground. And it will look like a living thing.”
It won’t be all Star Wars though. He mentioned that he will be showing off his art collection as well that includes pieces by Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth and Maxfiend Parrish. There will also be a theater that will screen movies, host lectures and also workshops.
Chicago is putting up the land but Lucas is the one fitting most of the bills. When asked if he could afford all that he simply said, “Yeah, I can.” Of course he can, Star Wars is the ultimate movie franchise.
But why the windy city out of all the other places it could have been? Most would have guessed Lucas would at least keep it in California since that is not only where he lives but where his famed Skywalker Ranch is – not the case. After that the next choice may have been New York City – again, not the case. So why Chicago? Well simple, it was his wife’s idea.
His wife, Mellody Hobson, is a Chicago native and very successful businesswoman and was originally thinking San Francisco but was over that city after “doodling around” with the idea of the Bay area for four years.
