Controversial Paris ‘butt plug’ sculpture deflated

A FIAC official said that the vandals also unplugged the pump that kept the structure erect.

American artist Paul McCarthy and his controversial green art installation were dealt a blow in Paris on Saturday.

Vandals took to the wires holding the piece, and after that, exhibit officials decided to remove the it altogether.

The piece of art in question has endured a bit of controversy since it was first installed as a part of the contemporary art exhibition in Paris. Although the artwork resembles a Christmas tree, it reminds most of a gigantic sex toy.

The New York Daily News reported Friday the sculpture had so many Parisians “hot and bothered”  that McCarthy was slapped by a passer by.

According to the Associated Press via Huffington Post, even the artist thinks his creation resembles an enormous butt plug.

The guide wires holding the piece together were cut by vandals sometime during the early morning hours of Saturday night. France’s cultural minister was not happy with the vandalism, saying that it was “a serious attack on the principle of artistic freedom.”

The sixty-nine-year-old artist is known for his controversial work, but he was surprised over the reactions he received in Paris, according to Yahoo News.

“Instead of a profound reflection about objects as a mode of expression with multiple meanings, we have witnessed violent reactions,” McCarthy said in a statement.

An anonymous source said that the vandals waited until the guard watching the piece was not looking, and they quickly clipped the wires holding it together. The source added that Parisian police were investigating the incident.
