The chopper that was used in the action film Captain America was sold for $1.35 million at an auction. It was the same bike used by Peter Fonda in the iconic film Easy Rider, making it the most expensive motorcycle in the world. It had previously been on display at the National Motorcycle Museum. The Harley Davidson star-spangled Panhead chopper is a piece of Hollywood history now belonging to the bidder.
The bike has a sleek, original style with lots of chrome. It was designed by Ben Hardy and Cliff Vaughs, two builders. More than one version was made, but this was the only one that survived. It first hit the big screen in 1969 as the chopper Peter Fonda rode. According to the auction catalog, it was restored by Dan Haggerty. The seller was Michael Eisenberg and the bid was brief and fierce by the Profiles in History auction house. There have been questions raised about how legitimate the chopper is, as Haggerty authenticated and sold two bikes. The other one is owned by Gordon Granger, who is furious with the auction and insists that only his is the authentic one. Not even Peter Fonda knows which one is the legitimate bike.
But Haggerty assures that the bike by Eisenberg is the real thing. Eisenberg is a collector of Hollywood memorabilia and has sold a big item of it. The name of the bidder has not been released. The chopper was previously on display in the museum for 12 years, complete with Easy Rider posters. Now it will have a new home. The staggering price tag made headlines and will be a treasured relic for years to come. It is a piece of film history and made a record at the auction. Hopefully it is the true chopper.
