Actress Misty Upham was found dead in a wooded area in Washington. The 32-year-old had gone missing on October 5. She dealt with bipolar disorder and had bouts of anxiety and depression and had stopped taking medication. Upham was last seen from her sister’s apartment on Muckleshoot Reservation. The cause of death is still uncertain, but her family believes her death was a tragic accident, not a suicide.
Upham was an actress of Native American heritage and part of the Blackfoot Tribe. She starred in August: Osage County with Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, and appeared in Django Unchained. For her role in Frozen River, she was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. Upham was currently working on a new film Crawlspace, a thriller due in theaters next year.
Her purse was found first, and then the police found the body in Auburn near the White River. A family member identified Upham. Whether this was an accident or suicide remains to be seen. However, in a Facebook press release, her father responded, “As her father I do not fear she committed suicide. I feel she has been hurt by accident or someone has put her in harm’s way.” He believes she fell to her death while trying to avoid police. Upham had recently moved back to Washington from California to be with family. She was found at the bottom of a cliff.
The investigation in her death is ongoing, and the actress’s passing came as a shock. She was not regarded as a missing person. There is no word yet on the cast and crew of Crawlspace. Production may be affected. The family is in mourning, but they believe it was all a terrible accident. They thanked tribal members for their help and set up a memorial fund.
