Black bear eats body of deceased California man who suffered fatal heart attack

Officials believe that a black bear ate the body of a man who died of a heart attack sometime last week.

A 65-year old California man did not receive the proper burial he deserved after passing away last week. Instead, he became the meal of a wild bear that has since disappeared.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Marion Lee Williams died of an apparent heart attack near the trailer that he lived in sometime last week. Williams, who lived in Humboldt County, was reportedly on his way to checking his water supplies when he suffered the fatal heart attack.

Shortly after dying, a nearby black bear found Williams’ body. The bear is believed to have dragged the body of Williams to a nearby cave where he ate him, leaving parts of his remains behind for his friends and the local authority to find this past Monday. His body was identified using his fingerprints, dentures and pieces of his clothing.

There isn’t much information available about Williams other than his age and location. He was reported missing last Sunday after not being seen since October 8th. Friends of his went searching for him near his property, which is when they found his remains. According to the Times, Williams lived “off the grid” by himself in his trailer.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has decided not to search for the bear after there was speculation that they would in order to put him down. They have announced to the public that the bear is no threat and was acting naturally. They don’t believe based on evidence that the bear attacked Williams. They believe that he came across the deceased body, saw it as a source of food, and used the body as such.
