The movie “Gone Girl’ is certainly not gone as a hit at the box office by any means. Amid of the influx of new movie challengers, the Affleck and Morton movie shone through to take the number one spot at the box office for the second consecutive week.

David Fincher’s adaptation of Gilliagan Flynn’s novel took in $26.8 million to raise its domestic total to an impressive $78.2 million. The movie had fought off an early challenge from Universal’s Dracula Untold which grossed a strong debut of $23.5 million and a second place rank according to the studio estimates calculated from the tracking service Rentrak.

Some of the other high-profile films that competed with Gone Girl was Disney’s  Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, which opened in third place with $19.1 million; not too mention to new Robert Downey Jr.’s drama The Judge opened only at fifth with $13.3 million.

Gone Girl stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike are perceived as the ultimate dysfunctional couple, but still managed to have stood atop of them all, thanks to a continued strong word of mouth for movie goers and a prominent social media campaign. The film has an 87% critical approval rating on survey site RottenTomatoes.com, along with a 91% audience thumb’s up which for those of us who are experienced with netflix or other movie sites that use these rating systems – these are certainly high, higher than some of our favorites.

“This is a thought-provoking film that still has people buzzing,” says Paul Dergarabedian, one of the box office analysts for Rentrak movie tracking company. “It’s rare for an adult drama that displays this kind of dominance over two weekends.”
