Dr. Luke responded with his own suit alleging Kesha is trying to defame and extort him.
A music industry mess is unfolding on the national stage. Singer Kesha filed suit against her long-time music producer “Dr. Luke” in Los Angeles on Tuesday alleging he had physically, emotionally, verbally, and sexually abused her over the past ten years. Hours later, Dr. Luke filed a countersuit in New York claiming Kesha’s suit was an extortion plot to get out of her music contract with him.
CNN reports Kesha’s suit is filled with claims of abuse, from Dr. Luke calling her an “fat f—king refrigerator” to him giving her a date-rape drug and assaulting her while she was unconscious. The suit says that the “unrelenting emotional and psychological abuse” led to mental health issues, including an eating disorder that Kesha received treatment for earlier in the year. Kesha’s lawyer Mark Geragos said that the lawsuit “was a wholehearted effort by Kesha to regain control of her music career and her personal freedom.”
Dr. Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald, signed Kesha in 2005 when she was a teenager. According to the Atlantic, his countersuit alleges Kesha is defaming him to get out of her contract and had in fact been threatening him with the lawsuit to extort him prior to filing. Gottwald is a enormously powerful behind the scenes mover in the music world, and is being repped by Christine Lepera, who has represented both Michael Jackson and Chris Brown in the past.
Both sides state they are confident of wining their suits.
