Christoph Waltz had been rumored for the role but is no longer involved.

The adventures of Jack Sparrow are set to continue in an upcoming fifth installment of the highly successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. This time, Captain Jack is set to take on none other than Anton Chigurh himself, Javier Bardem.

Sub-titled Dead Men Tell No Tales, this outing would see the 45-year-old Bardem take on the role of another potentially iconic villain, having been the baddie in the last James Bond vehicle, Skyfall, and of course, as Chigurh, the role that won him an Oscar in the Coen Bros’ film No Country for Old Men.

Reports indicate that Bardem became interested in the role after his wife Penelope Cruz was the female lead of the previous Pirates outing, in addition to having an opportunity to work with directing duo Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, best known for their film Kon-Tiki, which was nominated for a Best Foreign Film Oscar in 2012.

Kon-Tiki is a Norwegian film about the expedition of the same name mounted by Thor Heyerdahl in 1947. It delivered gorgeous visuals with a compelling story (told mostly on the water) at a low budget, which was how the directing team were noticed by Disney and subsequently hired on for the fifth film.

Christoph Waltz had been rumored for the villain role but is no longer involved, which has opened the door for Bardem.

Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane, and Stephen Graham are all returning for Pirates 5 with Jerry Bruckheimer producing once again for the studio.

The franchise has grossed $3.7 billion worldwide for Disney and while the previous installment wasn’t the biggest money-maker, it did well enough to have yet another sequel greenlit. It wasn’t an automatic decision, by any means, and the film was in doubt when Depp and Bruckheimer’s The Lone Ranger film underperformed in the summer of 2013.

But with Bardem circling the project, there is new life for Jack Sparrow and company.
