The speed translates to about 575 megabytes per second, which, according to Samsung, could download a full 1 gigabyte movie in less than three seconds.
It is completely debatable as to whether Apple or Samsung is currently winning the smartphone war, but Samsung is ready to stake a claim in another territory altogether: super fast Wi-Fi.
According to a recent report from the website Tech Radar, Samsung has developed a new 60 GHz Wi-Fi band capable of supporting internet speeds of 4.6 Gbps. That speed translates to about 575 megabytes per second, which, according to Samsung, could download a full 1 gigabyte movie in less than three seconds.
Of course, Samsung also notes something that just about anyone who has ever used the internet already knows: real-life Wi-Fi speeds do not always live up to what hardware is actually capable of. In order to take advantage of the full potential of the new super-speed Wi-Fi band, users will have to have a “best case scenario” where their router, modem, internet service provider, and all other items are working perfectly.
Still, even if Samsung’s new technology will not be reaching its stunning 4.6 Gbps speed all the time, even a fraction of that would still make it fast than what most devices currently on the market offer. The Tech Radar article says that the speed is five times faster than what current consumer devices can do.
Samsung wants to begin integrating the 60 GHz Wi-Fi band in devices as early as 2015. The use of the technology will hopefully be wide-ranging, from smartphones to medical equipment. Samsung also wants to use the wireless technology to better link together items on the Internet of Things.
