'American Horror Story: Freak Show' premiere breaks FX record, causing network to renew show for fifth season.
The first three seasons of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story earned an impressive number of accolades and award nominations, but the series’ fourth season may prove to be its most successful yet. Last week’s American Horror Story: Freak Show premiere episode set a record as the most-watched TV episode in FX’s history as a network with 10 million total viewers, beating the American Horror Story: Coven premiere’s 7.27 million viewers by 38 percent.
The Freak Show premiere, titled “Monsters Among Us”, brought in 6.54 million viewers in the coveted 18-49 demographic. Earning over 10 million viewers in total, “Monsters Among Us” beat the record that Sons of Anarchy’s Season 7 premiere episode broke for FX last month with 9.25 million total viewers. The network is so happy that Freak Show‘s premiere was the most-watched 90 minutes of television in FX’s 20 years of existence that CEO John Landgraf has already renewed the series for a fifth season.
“The American Horror Story anthology has had the highest growth trajectory of any show in FX history, not to mention an unprecedented track record of success in awards recognition,” said Landgraf in a statement Monday. “With Ryan Murphy and his partners, Brad Falchuk, Dante Di Loreto and Tim Minear at the helm, the show’s success is not surprising. AHS continues to deliver amazing stories, a brilliant troupe of actors led by Jessica Lange, and a visual style unlike any other on TV. With Nip/Tuck, Glee, The Normal Heart, and American Horror Story, Ryan Murphy has established himself as one of the most successful and prolific producers of this generation. We expect AHS: Freak Show and the next incarnation of AHS to further his legacy.”
Landgraf did not address the fact that Jessica Lange, one of the series’ biggest stars, recently said that season four will be her last with American Horror Story. However, Murphy said he won’t let her go easily.
“I’m never accepting [that she will leave],” said Murphy. “Before I was met with a really quick no and now I’m hearing, ‘Let’s keep talking.’ So that’s a promising sign. I think if I presented her with the right character, it could work. That’s my hope. I’m sending bribes every day!”
