Soldiers to use Android tablet to steer iRobots

Robot-makers iRobot have announced a new way to control their robots, in the form of a humble Android app. This app can be installed on almost any Android tablet and can be used in a variety of situations.

On Thursday, iRobot announced the first controller for first responders, law enforcement and industrial customers in the form of an Android tablet. In fact, almost any Android tablet on the market can be used to control these robots.

There have been over 6,000 defense and security robots deployed by iRobot worldwide, with the company having helped with things like the Fukushima nuclear meltdown and in war zone to help detect explosive devices.

“We needed to invest in simplifying the control of the robots so that more people with less training can use them,” said Orin Hoffman, technical director for iRobot. “If you can play Angry Birds, you can operate a robot.”

The new app, called the uPoint MRC, essentially makes these robots easier control, maneuver and operate. The controls are intuitive and make operating the robot easy.

The system even integrates cloud and in-built Android features, users can share information to a number of different cloud platforms, both public and private. In fact, users can even share or stream information to Facebook or Twitter.

While the system is certainly similar to a video game, in reality it’s much more practical. Things like bomb disposal should be much easier using the uPoint MRC controller.

Up until now, iRobot users had to use a separate monitor powered by a Linux based operating system.

Robot operators can also switch between multiple robots through changing to a different tab. The system will be released by the second quarter of 2015, though it likely won’t be that useful unless you need to safely dispose of a bomb.
