One woman died and two men were hospitalized after being hit by a train in Goleta just before 6:00 p.m. on Saturday night, The Associated Press reports.

Authorities say a passenger train struck people taking photos on a trestle on the California coast.

Officials say four people in their 20’s, who reportedly were foreign students, were standing on the train trestle near Vista Point, just north of Refugio Beach, around 5:59 p.m. taking photos of the sunset when an Amtrak train came around the corner at track speed.

Emergency personnel were called out at about 6 p.m. to Vista Point, near Arroyo Hondo, on a report that pedestrians had been hit by an Amtrak train, Fire Department spokesman Mike Eliason told The AP.

Eliason says they tried to run off the trestle between Refugio State Beach and Gaviota State Park, but three were hit by the train.

A woman was thrown onto the side of a hill and died at the scene. The other woman suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

One of the men suffered major injuries to his upper extremities, head, and torso and was taken to a nearby hospital by helicopter.

The second man was not hit by the train, and drove himself to the hospital to be with the friends once he was checked out by medical personnel at the scene.

The identities of the people involved in the collision have not been released.

The Amtrak Coast Starlight train was stopped until investigators cleared the scene. Some of the rail lines in the area are currently shut down.

In January, earlier this year, a woman was killed and her boyfriend injured when an Amtrak train collided with their car in Cary. Later, in June, three people were killed after an Amtrak train struck the vehicle they were inside of on the tracks in Mansfield just before midnight. The crash caused the train to partially derail. Authorities said there were two males and one female inside the vehicle.
