Three gang members were later linked to the crime.

The Associated Press reports that 59-year-old Susan Marie Mellen was freed from prison after spending 17 years behind bars for a murder she didn’t commit.

“I always knew that one day God would bring the truth to the light,” Mellen, who had been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the death of homeless man Richard Daly in Lawndale in 1997, told reporters.

According to ABC7.com, Innocence Matters looked into Mellen’s case and learned that the grandmother was convicted on the testimony of June Patti, a habitual liar, who said she overhead the 59-year-old confess to the murder of Daly.

Three gang members were later linked to the crime. One of those gang members, according to ABC7.com, said during a polygraph test that Mellen was not present at the murder of the homeless man.

“I believe she is innocent,” Superior Court Judge Mark Arnold said, according to The AP. “For that reason I believe in this case the justice system failed.”

“I’m a free woman now. Let me do the running man,” she told reporters before excitedly dancing, as can be seen in the video below.

According to KABC, dancing wasn’t the only fun thing that Mellen did after being released: She also dyed her hair.

“I had so much gray hair, and then I just thought, you know, it’d be nice to have my hair colored, just to feel good about yourself,” Mellen told the news station.

After being wrongly jailed for 17 years, the next 17 years are sure to be filled with plenty of dancing, hugging, laughing and merriment.
