Hooks was nominated for an Emmy award for her role as Vera Maroney on 30 Rock, and her acting career included a variety of roles and television shows.
Saturday Night Live alum Jan Hooks passed away after a long illness, CBS News reports. The actress was 57 years old.
Although Hooks will be remembered for her SNL impersonations and characters, notably playing, Candy Sweeney, one half of the Sweeney Sisters with fellow SNL alum Nora Dunn, she also received many laughs for her impressions of Hillary Clinton, Sinead O’Connor, Nancy Reagan, Betty Ford, Jody Foster, Bette Davis and Kathy Lee Gifford. The comedienne will also be remembered for her SNL roles as Brenda, The Waitress in the SNL skit The Waitress, with Alec Baldwin and for her mascara-drenched impersonation of Tammy Faye Bakker.
Hooks was nominated for an Emmy award for her role as Vera Maroney on 30 Rock, and her acting career included a variety of roles and television shows. After starring on SNL from 1986 to 1991, Hooks moved on to a role in the late 80s southern sitcom, Designing Women, while still making cameos on SNL until 1994.
Hooks also appeared on 3rd Rock From The Sun, The Dana Carvey Show and The Simpsons, Futurama and Primetime Glick.
She was born outside of Atlanta, in Decatur, Georgia in 1957, and her career started when she joined the exclusive comedy troupe The Groundlings. Before she landed her SNL role, Hooks played a small part in Goldie Hawn’s The Wildcats, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure and worked as a tour guide at The Alamo.
Hooks was passed over for the 1985 cast of SNL, and Joan Cusack was hired instead. She made the cut the following year, alongside one of SNL’s most remembered casts that included Dana Carvey, Kevin Nealon, Victoria Jackson and Phil Hartman.
