The "Transformers" explained that in 2013, he went through an "existential crisis."
Actor Shia LaBeouf had one of his more revealing and humorous interviews to date during a recent appearance on the daytime talk show Ellen, reports E! Online.
LaBeouf, 28, and host Ellen Degeneres touched on numerous issues, from the actor’s jail time, to his performance art, to his relationship with his mother.
“Jail was quite scary,” confessed LaBeouf. While the Nymphomania star only spent a day in jail, he said that it “felt like forever.”
“I really went all the way with it,” said LaBeouf. “They put a Hannibal mask on me and a lead jacket. It was very scary.”
According to LaBeouf, he was arrested because he “spit on a cop. That’s a no-no. I’m sorry if you’re watching, dude. I’m sorry. That was crazy, man.”
In addition to his arrest, LaBeouf also made headlines for his performance art. In February, the Lawless star wore a paper bag over his head to the premiere of Lars Von Tier’s Nymphomania. The bag had two holes cut out for eyes, and the phrase, “I am not famous anymore” written in black ink.
As a response to walking the red carpet with a paper bag over his head, the actor set up an additional piece of performance art in Los Angeles. The collaborative project was titled #IAMSORRY.
“There was a lot of negativity online,” explained LaBeouf. “So, I thought, ‘All right, well, let’s see what all this negativity is all about. Let’s invite it in. … We had a table with all these implements, you know, there was like an Indiana Jones whip and some pliers and…It was sort of no rules.
“So I figured maybe someone will pull my fingernails off,” continued the actor. “Basically I was sitting there with a bag over my head in this room. And we had these one-on-one situations where we’d invite one person at a time and they can do whatever they wanted. And there was also this bowl of these really malicious tweets. So, people would come in and read them. I was sitting in there broken. I was really truly apologetic, so I was sort of like apologizing to the public in a way. So, I thought for sure people were gonna come in and be super mean from what I’d been reading. But it wasn’t that way at all. It was very human. Once they got in there everything changed. They stopped looking at me as like an object they started looking at me as like a human and they were very loving. It was really human.”
Despite his rocky year, LaBeouf confessed that his mother was a source of strength.
“That’s my girl,” said LaBeouf, of his mother. “She called me, she’s like, ‘Stop f***ing around.’ [Now] I’m as good as I can be.”
In the end, LaBeouf was able to reconcile and explain his behavior. “I went through like an existential crisis, which turned into kind of like, a, explorations,” noted LaBeouf. “I had some hiccups, some judgment errors.”
While Shia LaBeouf spoke of his arrests, erratic behavior and performance art, he also appeared on Ellen Degeneres’ show to promote his upcoming movie, Fury, co-starring Brad Pitt.
