From the big screen to the small screen, fans are excited for 'Guardians of the Galaxy.'
The year’s top-grossing film thus far, Guardians of the Galaxy, is being reworked into an animated television series, confirms the Hollywood Reporter. The show is scheduled to hit airwaves next year.
The program will premiere on Disney XD as part of a special Marvel Comics-themed block of television. The Marvel Television production will follow the same premise of the comic and the movie, centering around Peter Quill as Star-Lord, who leads a pack of misfits to protect the universe.
Disney XD made the announcement Friday during Comic Con.
“The movie and franchise quickly became a worldwide phenomenon,” notes Marc Buhaj, Disney XD’s general manager and senior vp of programming.
The Guardians of the Galaxy movie has grossed more than $300 million domestically at the box office, and more than $600 million internationally.
“We’re looking forward to working with the great team at Marvel Television to deliver an engaging animated series that fans can enjoy each week,” continues Buhaj.
The team at Marvel Television are equally excited.
“After starring in the biggest movie of 2014, everyone wants more of Star-Lord and his crew –- now they’ll get it,” says Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television.
The animated version of Guardians of the Galaxy is officially scheduled for 2015, though no more precise date has been released.
