North Carolina gun owners might soon be allowed to carry handguns at the State Fair if a local gun-rights organization gets its wish.
When you think of fairs, there are a lot of things that you associate with them. Carousels, funnel cakes, cotton candy: those are just a few of the things that are commonly thought of when fairs come to mind. Generally speaking, guns aren’t, or in the past haven’t been one of the things associated with fairs. But that could all change if a local organization in North Carolina gets its way this upcoming week.
According to the LaCrosseTribune, a gun-rights group called Grass Roots North Carolina is seeking to have the carrying of concealed guns at the State Fair legalized and put on the books. If the group achieves its goal, then North Carolina will officially join a small number of other states such as Florida and Texas who allow for citizens to carry concealed handguns at fairs.
The group, which is headed by Paul Valone, is basing their argument on a recent piece of legislation passed by the state last year, which expanded the number of places for gun owners to carry their weapons. When looking at the law passed last year, there is a bit of a loophole in the rule of where citizens can carry guns, because the law doesn’t stipulate that citizens can’t carry weapons on fairgrounds. Also, the law that was passed last year provided gun owners the opportunity to carry guns in places where people gathered. State Representative George Cleveland’s understanding of the bill is that it allows for people to carry weapons at the agricultural and State fairs, so people should be allowed to carry their concealed weapons, based off of how the law is written.
The hearing to determine whether or not North Carolina gun owners will be allowed to carry guns on fairgrounds will take place on Monday. The State Fair in North Carolina starts on Thursday.
