Hackers are claiming that they have up to 200,000 pictures sent via Snapchat that will be released in an online database on Sunday. According to the report, the leak is from a third party snapchat app.
Hackers claim that they have obtained up to 200,000 photos from Snapchat users and that they will leak the photos online on Sunday.
The threats were first made on Thursday by users on the website 4chan.org, who are claiming that they will release the photos in a searchable database tied to Snapchat usernames.
According to the hackers, they had been intercepting photos sent from a third party Snapchat app for years. The hack is being dubbed the “Snappening” and follows a hack in which hundreds of celebrities personal photos were hacked from their iCloud accounts.
The claims raise concern over Snapchats claims that it deletes photos. According to Snapchat, photos are deleted as soon as they have been opened by recipients. Photos that aren’t opened within 30 days are deleted from the servers.
As far as mobile devices go, however, it is a little different. It has been discovered that Snapchat actually hides photos on Android devices so that other apps ignore them. Despite this, the photos can still be accessed by some third party apps that do not follow Android rules, essentially meaning that they do not disappear forever.
There is one third party app in particular, Snapsave, which could be the cause of the leak. Using Snapsave, upon receiving a picture, users are notified that they can take a screenshot or save a video. Users can then store images in the cloud, however the developer of the app denies that his app has anything to do with that.
Snapchat itself even admitted that sometimes it is possible to retrieve data after it has been deleted. Users should always take that into consideration before sending pictures.
