A "Selfie" lovers dream, the new HTC smartphone is the first to chase the Facebook generation.
The HTC Desire Eye, unveiled at a New York event on Wednesday, is the company’s newest smartphone and the first to appeal to those who take “selfie” pictures. The model includes two 13-megapixel cameras on both the front and back. “Desire Eye is fully equipped for those who love to take great photos, videos and selfies,” said a statement from the Taiwan-based company at the release.
The two-color uni-body device carries a 5.2-inch 1080p display with a pixel density of 423ppi. The main feature of the phone is the significant jump in the capabilities of the front-facing camera. It features a dual LED-enabled wide-angle 22mm lens, with an f/2.2 sensor aperture.
Beneath its exterior, the Android software is supported by a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor running at a speed of 2.3GHz. The smartphone supports 2GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board storage, microSD card slot, 2,400mAh Li-Polymer battery, and the second13MP camera at the back. It’s running Android 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box with HTC’s Sense 6 atop.
The only notable drawback is the inability to change batteries, but this is a familiar situation that many manufacturers seem to choose to gain greater battery life.
HTC said the camera’s design featured a sensor which automatically activated the device whenever it was picked up, eliminating the need for a power button. HTC said it plans to introduce live streaming with the camera through Google-owned YouTube in the near future.
The new phone will be sold in the United States through AT&T.
