Feig confirms rumors of his involvement in a female-led 'Ghostbusters' film on Twitter.
Director Paul Feig proved that he knows how to make hilarious female-led comedies in 2011’s Bridesmaids, and now the rising filmmaker will be putting his unique talents to use again for Sony Pictures’ highly-anticipated new Ghostbusters film. Feig officially confirmed the widespread rumor that the upcoming Ghostbusters will put a female twist on the cult classic franchise Wednesday, tweeting that the film will star “hilarious women.” The first two Ghostbusters films were directed by Ivan Reitman and starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis as a ghostbusting team tasked with saving New York City from demons after the city became infested with a ghoulish slime. Word spread in 2013 that the series would finally turn into a trilogy after being on hiatus for nearly three decades, but after Ramis died on Feb. 27 and Reitman stepped down as director, plans for the long-awaited film were completely changed. Upon learning of Feig’s potential involvement, his reputation for casting females in the leading roles of Bridesmaids and 2013’s The Heat caused media rumors to spread that the new Ghostbusters would also feature a female-led cast. “Yes, it will star hilarious women. That’s who I’m gonna call,” the director finally admitted on Tuesday. Feig will co-write the film with Katie Dippold, who first collaborated with him for The Heat. No cast has been announced yet, but Bill Murray recently gave Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Linda Cardellini and Emma Stone his approval as potential stars. “I would go to that movie,” he said. “And they’d probably have better outfits, too.” McCarthy is a likely candidate, as Feig cast the award-winning actress in Bridesmaids, The Heat and his 2015 film Spy as well.
