Oscar-winner discusses the release of her private, nude photos with Vanity Fair.
Over the past month, iCloud hackers have uploaded private, nude photographs of dozens of renowned celebrities to the imaged-sharing forum 4chan. Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, who had her nudes released several weeks ago, finally spoke out about the scandal in a Vanity Fair interview on Tuesday, calling it a crime and sexual violation.
The 24-year-old Hunger Games star started out the highly-anticipated interview admitting that she was frightened the photos would negatively impact her career. However, she refused to accept any blame for the incident and took the offensive against those who say that being a celebrity means she “had it coming.”
“Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this. It does not mean that it comes with the territory,” said Lawrence. “It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting. I can’t believe that we even live in that kind of world. ”
Lawrence considered writing an apology to her fans for the controversial incident, but decided against it because the pictures were solely meant for Nicholas Hoult, with whom she had been in a loving relationship for four years.
“It’s not a scandal. It’s a sexual violation. It’s disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated, and the first thought that crosses somebody’s mind is to make a profit from it. It’s so beyond me.”
Apple Inc is denying the widespread belief that the leaks were the result of a breach in their iCloud or Find My iPhone systems, but the FBI is currently looking into the matter.
