Actor known for playing a pastor on family-friendly series confesses to felony on leaked tape.
Stephen Collins, who famously portrayed a pastor on the popular family-friendly series 7th Heaven, is now under criminal investigation for alleged sexual misconduct with underage girls. TMZ released a taped confession Collins made during a 2012 therapy session on Tuesday, resulting in the actor being dropped from Universal Pictures’ upcoming comedy Ted 2.
At the instructions of her lawyer, Collins’ now-estranged wife, actress Faye Grant, recorded a 2012 therapy session in which she got Collins to admit he had molested and exposed himself to several underage girls. Secretly recording such a conversation is legal in California if it helps gather evidence on an individual who has committed a violent felony, such as molesting a child under the age of 14. Collins can clearly be heard on the tape confessing that he molested an 11-year-old relative of his first wife.
“There was one moment of touching where her hand, I put her hand on my penis,” he admits.
Celebrity news outlet TMZ discovered and released the incriminating tape Tuesday, prompting the Los Angeles and New York Police Departments to take another look at the case.
“We are reviewing the investigation to make sure nothing was missed at the time,” Los Angeles police spokeswoman Officer Nuria Vanegas told Reuters. “The case is not reopened, but we are reviewing again for accuracy.”
Grant claims that she is not responsible for the tape getting leaked, stating, “I woke up today to learn that an extremely private recording I handed over to the authorities in 2012 per their request in connection with a criminal investigation was recently disseminated to the press.”
In addition to Collins’ removal from Ted 2, UP TV stated today that they will be removing reruns of 7th Heaven from their schedule in light of the “disturbing allegations surrounding Collins.”
