Jay Leno taking another shot at primetime with CNBC show

The show will air in primetime and gives Leno the opportunity to focus on his love of automobiles.

Jay Leno is negotiating a return to television, and he’s staying with the NBC Universal family.

The 64 year old comedian left the airwaves back in February but is currently negotiating a deal to host a new show for the CNBC cable network, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

There is no start date nor title for the new show but it will air in primetime and gives Leno the opportunity to focus on his love of automobiles. No word either on whether it will be a talk show or a scripted effort.

Adding Leno to the lineup is in tune with the channel’s new direction. Shedding its reputation as a stuffy financial news network, CNBC has been actively trying to increase viewership among demos across the board by airing reruns of reality shows such as The Profit and Restaurant Startup in primetime, while its biggest ratings winner has been the reality game show Shark Tank.

Since leaving television, Leno has been busy with a stand-up comedy tour, hosting an awards show in Jerusalem and he appeared with NBC’s Al Roker on a USO tour to Afghanistan.

Considered loyal, almost to a fault, the former Tonight Show host still has ties to the network he was affiliated with for more than 20 years. When he left late-night for good, he hosted a primetime NBC talk show that ended after a disastrous short run, other networks were looking to sign him to a deal, including CNN and A&E. But his close personal relationship with CNBC president Mark Hoffman seems to have been a motivating factor for mounting his next TV gig on the network.

Some sources speculate the new show could be in line with Leno’s current web-series Jay’s Garage which is available on NBC.com while a Labor Day weekend special called Jay’s Garage: The Ultimate Car Week aired on CNBC earlier this year.
