Dr. Kent Brantly has donated his blood to two different patients in hopes of helping them survive the deadly Ebola virus.
Dr. Kent Brantly is an Ebola survivor whose most noteworthy actions of late have been to donate his blood twice in hopes of helping other patients infected with the deadly virus.
Brantly originally contracted the virus after spending time in Liberia to work with Samaritan’s Purse, a relief organization that has been aiding efforts to contain the virus as it ravages West Africa. Fortunately, Brantly recovered after being treated in Atlanta.
Then in September, Dr. Rick Sacra, who was also providing aid to patients in Africa, became infected. Brantly donated both plasma and blood to help Sacra recover from the deadly virus. Medical interventions worked and Sacra survived.
Recently, a freelance photographer named Ashoka Mukpo also contracted the virus while in Liberia. He was flown back to the United States and is being treated in Nebraska.
Angela Hewett, from the Nebraska Medical Center, decided to call Brantly in hopes that he would donate blood for Mukpo as he had for Sacra. Coincidentally, Brantly happened to be in Nebraska at the time. He was driving through the area on his way to Texas to speak at his alma mater, Abilene Christian University. He stopped off at a hospital in Kansas City and donated the blood and plasma for a second time.
In another twist of rare coincidence, Brantly’s blood type matched Mukpo’s. Not only did their blood types match, but Brantly’s had also matched Sacra’s when he donated the first time.
“It’s not a likely scenario that he would again have the same blood type. We are incredibly grateful that Dr. Brantly would take the time to do this, not once, but twice,” Hewett said.
