Microsoft unveils groundbreaking prototype for immersive 3D gaming

Star Trek fans rejoice as a truly original and immersive 3D concept gets a new look.

Microsoft’s IllumiRoom, which was a showcase at CES 2013, was the first step in the expansion of gaming. Although only a proof-of-concept stages, it looked couple Kinect sensors and projection-mapped environments for a more immersive 3D experience that was beyond the computer screen. While, the showcase was for research purposes, Microsoft never shelved the concept. Now, the company has launched a new demo showcasing where it has taken the technology: a platform it is calling RoomAlive.

RoomAlive is a proof-of-concept prototype that transforms any room into an immersive, augmented, magical entertainment experience,” the team explains on the Microsoft Research website. “RoomAlive presents a unified, scalable approach for interactive projection mapping that dynamically adapts content to any room. Users can touch, shoot, stomp, dodge and steer projected content that seamlessly co-exists with their existing physical environment.”

The idea behind the original IllumiRoom has been taken to the next level as the system turns your entire room into a projection-mapped, augmented reality experience. With six procam units, composed of a projector, Kinect sensor and computer, every square inch of a room can be projection mapped.

Each of the six procam units is auto-calibrating, which means all the user has to do is install the units and all six work together to create a unified model of the operating space. The six Kinect sensors then track the user’s head position which lets the software correct the perspective. The projected imagery follows the users’ point of view and appears 3D wherever they are in the room.

Like IllumiRoom, RoomAlive is, at this point only a proof-of-concept. Microsoft has yet to reveal its future plans for the system. The question remains whether it be releasing it commercially or going onto develop it into something even cooler still.
